A hero to people all over the world "is gone".

He was the first black President of South Africa (from 1994 until 1999).

Mandela was born in 1918 and he became famous for his long fight against bad government and racial prejudice.

He was in prison from 1962 to 1990 for trying to overthrow the pro-apartheid government. After he left prison, he worked to achieve human rights and a better future for everyone in South Africa.

He was, is and will be respected for his courage and wisdom in bringing people together to live in peace.

For many Londoners the lighting of the Trafalgar Square Christmas Tree marks the start of their Christmas celebrations.
The ceremony will take place at 6pm on Thursday, 5th December (always on the first Thursday in December).

This British Event started in 1947 and it symbolises the close friendship between two nations: Norway and Britain.
The tree is an annual gift from the Norwegian people to Londoners, in gratitude for the assistance that Britain lent to Norway in Second World War.

Norwegian people choose and cut the most beautiful pine (a spruce, called "The Queen of the Forest") in the Oslo forest which is destined to stand proudly in London’s Trafalgar Square next to Nelson's Column.

After that the tree is embarked on a 700-mile journey by boat and lorry.

This year the tree was felled on 19th November and it arrived in London on 2nd December.
It is 55 years old and it is 20 metres tall... That's nothing!!
After the switching, there is always a band playing and a choir singing Christmas carols.
